The V-12 engine is mated to an AMG Speedshift Plus 7-speed sequential-shift transmission with a
single automated clutch. The gearbox has four individual drive modes selected at the touch of a button: Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S), Sport Plus (S+) and Manual (M). The car is equipped with a fuel-saving start/stop mode that is active when the transmission is set to C.
Like the other new SLs in the line, this latest model takes advantage of the high strength, lightweight aluminum construction—the only steel in the body is found in the windshield surround. Carbon-fiber composite body panels are also used to further reduce weight.
The 2013 Mercedes SL65 AMG is also fitted with an adaptable two-mode sport suspension, plus 6-piston front and single piston rear calipers clamping down on 15.4 in. front and 14.2 in. rear rotors.
The new model shares the same retractable glass roof as the other roadsters in the line, which features Magic Sky Control that allows its tint to switch from light to dark at the touch of a button.
The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG is slated to hit showrooms this November, while the SL550 is available now starting at $106,375. The V-8 SL63 will go on sale in July, and prices for both AMG roadsters have yet to be announced.
