Jaguar C-X16 Concept

Jaguar rolled into the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show  with a new grand-touring sports-car concept.

The C-X16 is a low-slung 2-passenger, 2-door coupe with styling reminiscent of the current-generation Jaguar XK Series. With this concept, the name of the game is high performance and low fuel consumption.

The British automaker is working to achieve this by building the C-X16 out of aluminum. Instead of a thumping V8 engine, the concept relies on a new supercharged 375-horsepower 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine paired with a 94-horsepower battery-powered electric motor. An 8-speed automatic transmission gets power to the ground. Estimated 0-62-mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration for the 3,527-pound concept car is 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph. It can also run solely on electric power at speeds up to 50 mph.

A unique feature of the C-X16 is its “Push to Pass” system. Based on a technology used by Formula One racers, Push to Pass captures the car’s kinetic (moving) energy and stores it for use by the electric motor. When the system is fully charged, the driver can push a button on the steering wheel to unleash a 94-horsepower boost for use during acceleration.

Inside, the C-X16’s cabin uses Jaguar’s “Connect and View” infotainment system. When a supported smartphone is plugged into a tray between the seats, the phone’s display will then show up on the dashboard’s central touchscreen. The system supports navigation, audio playback, as well as the ability to make and receive phone calls.

Officials did not announce pricing or production plans for the C-X16. If we had to guess, many of this car’s design cues will find their way into the next-generation XK . Whether the drivetrain and connectivity features will come along is anybody’s guess.
